Benoît’s Bio

  • At the 2017 Can Am Para-swimming Championships, Huot took home a gold medal in the 200-m medley.
  • At his fifth Paralympic Games, Huot made Canadian swimming history, surpassing Stephanie Dixon and tying Michael Edgson for second all-time with 20 Paralympic swimming medals (Tim McIsaac, 28).

  • Huot earned a bronze medal in the 400-m freestyle in a personal best time.

  • Huot also finished short of the podium two other times, with 4th in the 200-m individual medley and 5th in the 100-m backstroke

  • His backstroke performance was noteworthy as Huot set a Canadian record at age 32.

  • Huot’s 2017 performance earned him his 11th Male Para-swimmer of the year (2006, 2008, 2010-2013, and 2015).
  • Reached the podium three times in the multi-class events at the 2016 Olympic & Para-swimming Trials, winning the 400-m freestyle with a time ranked second in the world in the S10 class to qualify for his fifth Paralympic Games. He was second in the 200-m individual medley and 100-m backstroke.
  • Huot won gold in the 400-m freestyle and silver in the 200-m individual medley, 100-m backstroke and 4×100-metre 34-pt relay at the Parapan Am Games.
  • Delivered the Athletes’ Oath during the opening Parapan Am opening ceremonies.
  • In 2016, Huot won Swimming Canada’s President Award.
  • Earlier in the summer, he won three medals at 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow Scotland: Silver in the 200-m IM and 400-m freestyle plus bronze in the 100-m back.
  • His 2015 performances earned him his tenth Swimming Canada Male Para-swimmer Of The Year award
  • Huot completed a self-described crazy year in 2014 with a gold medal in the 200-m IM at the Pan Pacific Para-swimming Championships. He added a silver minutes later in the 100-m backstroke.
  • Huot withstood the pressure as the hometown favourite at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, winning the gold medal in the 200-metre individual medley just 0.33 seconds off his world record time set a year earlier at the Paralympic Games.
  • Huot was Canada’s flag bearer for the London 2012 Closing Ceremony after increasing his career Paralympic medal total to 19.
  • London 2012 was his fourth Paralympics, and he celebrated by winning a medal of each colour. Huot won gold in the SM10 200-metre individual medley, setting a world record in the process. He also took silver in the 400-m freestyle and bronze in the 100-m backstroke.
  • His best Paralympics were in Athens in 2004 with five gold medals and a silver.
  • Four years earlier he collected three gold medals and three silvers at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics.
  • In 2008 at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, Huot won four bronze medals.
  • Huot, whose impairment is club feet, started swimming competitively at age 10 with Hippocampe de St-Hubert.
  • Outside of the pool he has been an advocate for Paralympic sport and physical activity. He was a Right To Play Ambassador from 2007 – 2013, visiting projects in Mali and Rwanda, and his Benoît Huot Foundation provides funding support to allow athletes to strive for both their academic and athletic goals.
