Canadian swimmers look to maintain momentum through day three

WINDSOR, Ont. – Four Canadian swimmers and one relay will swim in tonight’s finals at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Windsor, Ont.

Penny Oleksiak, Sandrine Mainville, Hilary Caldwell, Olivia Anderson, and the mixed 4×50-m medley relay will look to reach the podium Thursday night.

Oleksiak, the 16-year-old swimming sensation from Toronto, is tied for first after Wednesday’s semifinal in the 100-m freestyle. She won a gold medal in the long course 100-m freestyle at the Rio Olympic Games in August.

Oleksiak has fed off the home crowd packing the stands at the WFCU Centre.

“I like knowing that there’s people there cheering for me.”

Mainville will also be competing in the 100-m freestyle final. The 24-year-old is going in fourth after swimming 52.58 in the semifinal.

Caldwell, who trains out of the High Performance Centre – Victoria, is going into tonight’s final ranked third. The 25-year-old Olympic bronze medallist swam in 2 minutes, 3.74 seconds to qualify for the final.

Anderson will also race in tonight’s final. She’ll be competing in the long distance 800-m freestyle. On Wednesday morning the Mississauga, Ont., native swam the race in 8:24.65 and is seeded fourth in tonight’s final.

Javier Acevedo, Richard Funk, Katerine Savard, and Michelle Williams represented Canada in the mixed 4×50-m medley relay Thursday morning. The four swimmers swam the race in 1:39.63 to qualify Canada in fourth place.

“It was a fun race, we wanted to set the team up well for finals tonight.” said Acevedo.

Savard also swam the 50-m butterfly on Thursday morning. She qualified for semifinals in 9th place after a 25.96.
