OTTAWA – This year marks the 50^th anniversary of Elaine “Mighty Mouse” Tanner receiving the Lou Marsh Trophy for her outstanding performance at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Lou Marsh Trophy is awarded yearly to recognize Canada’s greatest athlete. In 1966, at only 15 years old, Elaine Tanner became the youngest athlete in Canadian history to earn the award, a record that remains unbroken.

Elaine’s exceptional performance in Jamaica earned her a total of seven medals, including four gold medals. Additionally, she broke two world records and she earned the distinction of Most Outstanding Athlete of the Games. Two years later at the Mexico City 1968 Olympic Games, she went on to become the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic swimming medal, capturing three medals.

In order to properly commemorate and recognize Elaine Tanner’s accomplishments, there will be an event in Toronto open to the public. The details are listed below:
