Swimming Canada has announced the participants for this year’s Relay Camp as part of its continued initiative to develop internationally competitive relays.

Six men and nine women will represent Canada at the upcoming Pro Swim Series event in Charlotte, N.C. The group will convene for a four-day camp at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre from May 8-11, then attend the Pro Swim Series competition from May 12-15.

The group is made up of the likely candidates for the men’s and women’s 4×100-m freestyle and 4×100-m medley relays for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“Since 2013 Swimming Canada has implemented a strategy to develop all our national relay teams,” said Swimming Canada High Performance Director John Atkinson. “This is a key part of our continued strategy into the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The camp and racing opportunities will allow our athletes and coaches to fine-tune relay strategies, race hard together and improve as a team.”

The swimmers will compete in individual events, and USA Swimming has also offered Canada the opportunity to race relays in a ‘time trial’ setting between prelims and finals.

Fourteen of the 15 swimmers have been nominated to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games team. They will be joined by Calgary breaststroker Jason Block, a provisional nomination contingent on Canada qualifying for the men’s 4×100 medley relay.
