Kierra Smith leads strong Canadian showing at U.S. Pro Swim Series

MINNEAPOLIS – Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., won the women’s 200-m breaststroke to headline a five-medal Canadian performance on Friday at the U.S. Pro Swim Series.

The 21-year-old Smith clocked two minutes and 24.36 seconds for the win.  It was her second international medal within a couple of weeks. Late last month she took bronze at a FINA World Cup in Tokyo.

Haley Spencer of the U.S. took the silver in 2:26.92 and Martha McCabe of Toronto was third for the bronze in 2:27.13.

Canada also had two medallists in the women’s 100-m backstroke. Missy Franklin of the U.S. won the race in 1:00.18 with Kylie Masse of Toronto second in 1:00.31 and Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., third in 1:00.66.

For the second time at this competition, Santo Condorelli reached the podium with silver in the men’s 50-m freestyle clocking a personal best 22.54. He was also second in the 100 butterfly on Thursday. Nathan Adrian of the U.S., was first in a pool record 21.56.

Noemie Thomas of Richmond, Ont., was sixth in the 200-m butterfly and Mack Darragh of Oakville, Ont., seventh in the 200-m butterfly.

Competition ends Saturday.
