Canadian edges Phelps for silver at U.S. Pro Swim Series

MINNEAPOLIS – Canadian national team member Santo Condorelli edged American superstar Michael Phelps for the silver medal in the men’s 100-m butterfly on Thursday to open the first stop on the U.S Pro Swim Series circuit.

Giles Smith of the U.S. won the race in 52.57 seconds, Condorelli was a mere 0.01 seconds from the gold in 52.58 and Phelps followed in 52.99. Condorelli, of Kenora, Ont., established himself as a potential medal contender for next summer’s Olympic Games with a fourth place finish in the 100-m freestyle at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Two-time world championship finalist Noemie Thomas of Richmond, B.C., added a bronze in the women’s 100-m butterfly in 58.23. Kelsi Worrell of the U.S. and her compatriot Dana Vollmer were 1-2 in 57.91 and 58.07.

Richard Funk of Edmonton was sixth in the men’s 100-m breaststroke and Emily Overholt of Vancouver seventh in the women’s 400-m individual medley.

Competition continues through to Saturday.
