SINGAPORE – Canada’s Santo Condorelli placed fifth in the men’s 50-m freestyle and sixth in the 100-m butterfly on Sunday at a FINA World Cup swimming competition but was unable to compete in his best event the 100-m freestyle.

In the 50-m freestyle, Katsumi Nakamura of Japan won the gold medal in 22.47 seconds.  Kyle Chalmers led a trio of Australians in second at 22.52 followed by Te Haumi Maxwell in 22.68 and Andrew Abood in 22.88. Condorelli followed in 22.89.

In the 100-m butterfly, Masato Sakai of Japan was first in 53.53 followed by Viacheslav Prudnikov of Russia in 53.66 and Zheng Wen Quah of Singapore in 53.66.  Condorelli clocked 54.43.

All of Saturday’s races, including the men’s 100-m freestyle were cancelled due to a high level of haze in the swimming complex. The level of haze in the venue overpassed the limit established by the Singapore government.

Condorelli has been one of Canada’s top swimming revelations this season.  At the FINA World Championships, the Los Angeles-based 20-year-old  helped Canada to bronze in the 4X100-m freestyle mixed relay and was fourth in the men’s 100-m freestyle missing the podium by a mere 0.07 seconds. At the Pan Am Games he collected two silver and two bronze.
